Mixed Hardwood Leaf Litter for Isopods - Heat-Treated (1 gallon)

Your leaf litter is gone, the crew is picking at bare substrate, and the yard is not an option. It has been sprayed, or it is February, or you would rather not find out what else came in with the leaves.

This is a hardwood mix, oak-led, collected from unsprayed woods, baked at about 200F, sorted and packed dry. Oak is the backbone because it breaks down slowly and stays edible for weeks instead of going to mush in a fortnight. The maple and other hardwoods in the bag soften faster, so the crew gets something to start on and something that lasts. Different leaves rotting at different speeds is how a real forest floor feeds things, which is why we stopped sorting down to one species.

Heat-treated because that kills the mites and gnat larvae that ride in on wild-collected leaves, and because dry litter ships light and will not mold in the bag.

One note from our own bins: top it up as it goes. The crew eats the litter, so a bin showing bare soil is a hungry bin, and the crumbs in the bottom of the bag are food too. Do not pick them out.

The mix shifts with the season and with what is actually on the ground. Every bag is oak-heavy hardwood, none of it sprayed, all of it heat-treated, and no bag will look exactly like the photo.
