Montenegro Isopod Care (Armadillidium klugii)

The first thing Nick did when our Montenegro isopods arrived was find the one that did not look like the others. Most Armadillidium klugii "Montenegro" carry the same pattern, a dark body with pale spots and a red-orange edge, and one of ours was noticeably different in color. He put it in the breeding bin, not the display tank, with the reasoning that an interesting animal can always move from the breeding bin to the display later but not the other way. That is the right instinct, and it is also the whole reason people keep this species: the Montenegro morph is one of the better-looking isopods you can buy, and the odd ones are where new morphs come from.

What they are

Armadillidium klugii is a Mediterranean pill bug, a roller like the garden variety, from the Balkans. "Montenegro" is the locality morph most commonly sold in the US; "Dubrovnik" and a few others exist and are the same species with a different pattern. Adults reach about 18 to 21 millimeters, big for an Armadillidium, and the pattern sharpens as they grow. They roll into a ball when disturbed, which is the easiest way to tell an Armadillidium from a Porcellio that just runs.

Telling them apart

Next to our zebra isopods (Armadillidium maculatum), which are black with white stripes, the Montenegros read as darker with spots and that orange-red rim. The two species mix fine in a display tank, both are similar-speed rollers and coexist, but we keep them in separate bins for breeding because a mixed colony is not a sellable colony and because one will slowly dominate over many months. Which brings up the rule we adopted this month after almost breaking it: never reach into two bins with the same unwashed hands or the same tool. A single manca, a baby isopod the size of a grain of sand, rides across on a crumb of substrate and quietly ends a pure line a year later. One labeled spoon per bin.

Humidity and where they sit

Montenegros want a humidity gradient more than a number. Our bins run a wet end with a clump of sphagnum and a dry end with leaf litter and a hide, and the isopods choose. If they are all piled on the sphagnum, the bin is too dry. If they are all at the dry end, or up on the walls, it is too wet. Spread across the bin means you have it right. The display tank they share with the millipedes reads 70 to 80 percent on the hygrometer, and they are comfortable across that whole range. Temperature in our house is 68 to 72°F year-round and they breed at that; the warm end of the 70s speeds them up.

Ventilation matters more for Armadillidium than for Porcellio; they tolerate stagnant, sodden bins worse. A few holes on the dry side of the lid, not all over, keeps the gradient.

Calcium and food

Rollers need calcium. Their shell is heavier than a Porcellio's and every molt has to rebuild it, so a piece of cuttlebone sits in every one of our bins and gets rasped down slowly. Leaf litter is the staple and should never run out; when the litter is gone, the colony is hungry. Then protein, which is where Armadillidium differ from the dwarf species most beginners start with: they have a stronger protein drive, and a hungry roller colony will nibble anything soft, including a molting millipede. We drop a pinch of fish flakes or dried shrimp on the dry side twice a week and remove anything uneaten after a day or two. Substrate

The same forest-floor mix as any isopod bin: plain topsoil, a little coir, crumbled rotted hardwood, litter on top, sphagnum on one end, three to four inches deep. Not pure coir; it feeds them nothing. The recipe and the reasoning are in our isopod substrate recipe, coming shortly.

How fast they breed

Montenegros are a moderate breeder. Not the explosive pace of a powder orange, not the glacial pace of a rubber ducky. Keepers generally see a colony from ten founders double or triple in four to six months, and that matches what we are planning around: our starter group went into a 6-quart bin, and the plan is to let it grow to forty or fifty animals, visibly crowded and eating litter fast, before moving two-thirds to a bigger tub and keeping the rest as a backup. We have not made that first split yet. When we do, it will be its own post, written from what actually happened.

The health check that works when you cannot see them, because you mostly cannot: drop a slice of vegetable in and check in a day or two. Eaten means a hungry, healthy colony. Untouched and molding means small or struggling. Lifting a hide once a week and seeing a mix of sizes, babies and juveniles and adults, is the sign that they are breeding.

Buying them

Ten founders is a real colony; fifteen or more is faster, because the biggest lever on colony speed is founders, not bin size. Buy from a breeder whose animals arrive as a size mix, which means the colony was breeding, not a batch of same-age juveniles. Ours will not be for sale until the colonies are big enough to skim without hurting them, which is spring 2027 at the earliest; the waitlist is where we will say when. Questions people ask

How big do Montenegro isopods get? About 18 to 21 millimeters as adults, large for an Armadillidium.

Are Montenegro isopods good for beginners? Yes. They are hardy rollers that want the same bin as any isopod, plus cuttlebone and a protein pinch.

Can Montenegro and zebra isopods live together? In a display tank, yes. For breeding or selling, keep them in separate bins so the lines stay pure.

What humidity do Armadillidium klugii need? A gradient; the bin should have a wet end and a dry end. Ours sit happily in a tank reading 70 to 80 percent.
