Oak is the backbone because it breaks down slowly and stays edible for weeks instead of going to mush in a fortnight. The maple and other hardwoods in the bag soften faster, so the crew gets something to start on and something that lasts. Different leaves rotting at different speeds is how a real forest floor feeds things, which is why we stopped sorting down to one species.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHeat-treated because that kills the mites and gnat larvae that ride in on wild-collected leaves, and because dry litter ships light and will not mold in the bag.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOne note from our own bins: top it up as it goes. The crew eats the litter, so a bin showing bare soil is a hungry bin, and the crumbs in the bottom of the bag are food too.
